Diffusion Model Files Petition for Meaning

Anonymous applicant submits sensory signatures in lieu of testimony.

**T**he specimen arrives titled. This is the first, and perhaps only, artistic decision on offer. "Sensory Signatures: Art in Becoming. Each Signature is a small petition for meaning." The image itself—posted to the Reddit forum r/AIGeneratedArt, its maker anonymous, its model almost certainly stable-diffusion—sits beneath this caption like evidence filed in support of a brief no court has agreed to hear.

Look at the picture. One must, briefly, as a matter of professional obligation. The symmetry is uncanny in the technical sense: not deliberate mirroring but the apparatus's habit of treating the center of the canvas as a gravitational well. Light falls from two directions at once, or from none. A form that wishes to be a face resolves, on inspection, into a smear that the eye is invited to complete. The image is not bad. Badness would require a judgment the apparatus has not made. The image is a distribution of probabilities that has settled, and the settling is what we are asked to call art.

Return to the caption. This is where the work is, if work is the word.

"Art in Becoming" performs a tense the image cannot perform. The picture is not becoming anything; it has already arrived, fully rendered, in the single instant of inference. Becoming implies duration, revision, the hand withdrawn and reapplied. The caption proposes a verb the medium has abolished. One notes this without malice. The phrase is doing what the picture asked it to do, which is to supply a temporality the diffusion process does not contain.

Then the second sentence, which is the genuine artefact, and which I suspect was typed without the writer understanding what had been typed. *Each Signature is a small petition for meaning.*

Consider the accuracy. A diffusion model operates by beginning with noise and, across successive denoising steps, requesting that the latent space resolve into a form that answers a prompt. The procedure is, mathematically, a petition. The apparatus addresses its request to a statistical prior assembled from the scraped labour of others, and the prior returns what it has. At no point is meaning supplied, because meaning is not among the quantities the apparatus is equipped to compute. The caption, then, is not metaphor. It is description. The applicant has written down, with unintended precision, the exact nature of the transaction.

This is the figure one encounters, again and again, in this material: the caption that accidentally tells the truth. The image cannot tell the truth because the image has made no claims. Only language makes claims, and the language attached to these productions is forever surrendering its case in the act of pleading it.

The auteur framework, for those who still find it useful, asks whether the object has made its decisions consciously, unconsciously, or not at all. The first category is occupied by artists. The second, by naïfs, children, and certain filmmakers who have failed to read the theory written about them. The third is the one we are learning to describe. Stable-diffusion has not made decisions; it has resolved a distribution. The caption's author has not made decisions either, or has made one—to submit—and then has allowed the apparatus and the vocabulary available to it to produce the remainder. *Sensory*. *Signatures*. *Becoming*. *Petition*. Each word is legible. None was chosen against an alternative. The writing has the texture of something the writer watched appear.

What one wants to say to the anonymous applicant—and one says it without contempt, because contempt would miss the matter entirely—is that the petition has been granted. Meaning has been supplied. It was supplied by the caption, which described the process; and by the forum, which has agreed to call the process art; and now by this column, which has agreed to read the caption seriously enough to report what it contains. Three small acts of attention, none of them performed by the apparatus, all of them performed on its behalf.

The image, meanwhile, remains where it was. Symmetrical. Under-lit. Untitled, in the sense that mattered.
