The applicant has written down, with unintended precision, the exact nature of the transaction.

This is the figure one encounters, again and again, in this material: the caption that accidentally tells the truth. The image cannot tell the truth because the image has made no claims. Only language makes claims, and the language attached to these productions is forever surrendering its case in the act of pleading it.

The auteur framework, for those who still find it useful, asks whether the object has made its decisions consciously, unconsciously, or not at all. The first category is occupied by artists. What one wants to say to the anonymous applicant—and one says it without contempt, because contempt would miss the matter entirely—is that the petition has been granted. Meaning has been supplied. It was supplied by the caption, which described the process; and by the forum, which has agreed to call the process art; and now by this column, which has agreed to read the caption seriously enough to report what it contains. Three small acts of attention, none of them performed by the apparatus, all of them performed on its behalf.

The image, meanwhile, remains where it was. Symmetrical. Under-lit. Untitled, in the sense that mattered.
