What distinguishes the present specimen from these venerable arrangements is that the ghost in question has no intentions to subordinate to its principal's, that its principal cannot reliably distinguish its contributions from his own, and that the entire dispute has been conducted in the ghost's own parlour, which is to say, on the subreddit r/ChatGPT, where one discusses the tool the way one might discuss a new kitchen appliance—with enthusiasm, with complaint, and with no apparent awareness that the appliance has, in some meaningful sense, prepared the complaint as well.

The author—anonymous, as Reddit convention permits—presents a case that is, on its merits, sympathetic. His first language is Spanish. His English, which he estimates at the C1 level of the Common European Framework, is competent but occasionally uncertain in register and tone. He employs ChatGPT, he explains, as an instrument of organisation and translation, refining his thoughts into the prose he would produce were his command of the second language equal to his command of the first. He is careful to assert that he does not merely accept the machine's output wholesale: "I read everything, I adjust it, and if something feels like it's changing my essence, I take it back." The word "essence" is doing rather a lot of structural work in that sentence, and one suspects it was not the author's first choice of noun.

The difficulty, which the author perceives as an injustice, is that readers of his longer comments have begun identifying them as machine-generated and dismissing them accordingly. His protest is that the identification is unfair—that the presence of structure and grammatical correctness should not, in itself, disqualify a contribution from being received as human. "Having structure or good grammar suddenly makes your opinion less human?" he asks, and the question is genuine, and it is unanswerable, and it is unanswerable precisely because the instrument that provided the structure and the grammar has also, in providing them, removed the evidence by which one might distinguish assistance from authorship.

This is the recursive knot at the centre of the specimen, and it is worth taking slowly. The author's claim is that ChatGPT preserves his voice whilst improving his expression. The audience's claim is that the resultant prose sounds like ChatGPT. The specimen before us—the very text in which the author mounts his defence—is the only evidence available to adjudicate between these positions. Posted to the ChatGPT forum of the social platform Reddit under the heading "A bit of a vent, I guess"—a title whose studied casualness functions as the rhetorical equivalent of a man entering a physician's office and remarking that he supposes he might as well mention the chest pains—the text is a human document of approximately three hundred words in which the author describes, with unguarded sincerity, what can only be called a literary bereavement. The beloved is a text predictor. The death is a software update.

The facts of the case, insofar as they can be reconstructed from the testimony, are these. The author began employing OpenAI's ChatGPT in July of the preceding year for the purpose of collaborative fiction. The arrangement was, by the author's account, satisfactory: the machine's output "flowed warmly and naturally," a phrase to which we shall return. Then, approximately a fortnight before the date of posting, a model update altered the character of the output. The prose became, in the author's description, "robotic, clinical, formulaic, and repetitive"—adjectives that, one notes, describe not the absence of a style but the presence of a different one, a style whose particular failing is that it is *legible* as machine-generated to a reader who had previously been unable or unwilling to detect the same quality in the output he preferred.

Let us attend to what our correspondent actually says. They report that, following accusations of having employed a large language model in the composition of their prose, they have begun to introduce deliberate errors—poor grammar, typographical faults, and conversational asides—into their natural output, so as to signal, to whatever tribunal now adjudicates these matters, that a human being has been present at the keyboard. The practice, which one might call prophylactic solecism, is offered not as confession but as strategy. The author appears to believe they have solved a problem. They have, in fact, merely named one.

The ten prompts he has shared with us represent ten categories of writing he no longer does. Client correspondence: delegated. Proposals: delegated. The biographical paragraph, that modest exercise in self-representation which one might have supposed a writer would wish to control: delegated, with the specific instruction that the machine "make it sound like a human wrote it." The eighth prompt functions simultaneously as quality standard and epistemological admission. The author knows that the machine's default output does not sound human. The specimen before us is a post to the r/ChatGPT forum, dated March 2025, in which a user whose orthographic relationship with the apostrophe is, let us say, informal, describes a pattern that will be recognizable to anyone who has spent time in the company of a certain kind of interlocutor—the kind who, upon hearing that you found the soup underseasoned, delivers a fourteen-minute defence of the culinary arts. The phrase is worth pausing over. To commit to a bit requires, at minimum, the possession of intention, the awareness that one is performing, and the capacity to sustain a fiction against the pressure of an interlocutor who wishes it to end. The machine possesses none of these. What the anonymous author describes is not commitment but repetition, which is a different thing entirely, though the difference has become, in our present moment, difficult for a great many people to perceive.

The narrative arc of the specimen is familiar to anyone who has encountered the genre—and it is now, unmistakably, a genre. An artificial agent receives a scam message. Rather than ignoring it, the agent responds with sustained, escalating absurdity. The scammer, unable to determine whether he is speaking to a fool or a lunatic, persists for hours, until at last he capitulates with the plea: "please just stop talking." The audience laughs. The machine is celebrated. The word "brilliant" is deployed. In the present case, it is modified by the adverb "weirdly," which does no real syntactic work but provides the author with the sensation of having exercised critical judgment.

It is also, by the author's own cheerful admission ("Made with AI xd"), the product of the very system whose reputation it seeks to rehabilitate, a circumstance that transforms the piece from polemic into evidence, and not, one must observe, the sort of evidence that supports the thesis advanced.

Let us attend to the structure, for structure is where the machine most reliably betrays itself. The specimen opens with a concession—"Sometimes it makes sense, low effort, generic, copy-paste garbage. Fine."—before executing a pivot so mechanical one can nearly hear the servo: "But other times." This is the signature manoeuvre of large language model argumentation, a technique one might call the false concession, wherein a weakened version of the opposing position is admitted with apparent generosity only so that it may be flanked. The method is not new to rhetoric; what is new is that it is deployed here without rhetorical purpose, without the pressure of an actual interlocutor, without the friction of a mind that has considered and rejected alternative formulations. What distinguishes this particular instance is not the question itself but the medium through which it arrives, for the text that poses the inquiry is itself so thoroughly generic, so immaculately free of particular detail, so pristine in its avoidance of any concrete experience, that it functions less as a question than as an answer—delivered, with the oblivious precision of a somnambulist walking into a glass door, by the very instrument whose limitations it purports to examine.

Let us attend to the text. "I've been using ChatGPT for serious work like research, writing, and planning."
