Junior Programmer Rates Machine Above Colleagues; Cites Clarity He Lacks Means to Audit

A user of ChatGPT reports that the system explains legacy code more clearly than experienced engineers, without noting that he would need to be an experienced engineer to know whether the explanations were correct.

THE specimen is a post to the Reddit forum r/ChatGPT, dated December 2024, in which an anonymous programmer solicits agreement for the proposition that ChatGPT explains code better than the senior developers on his team. The post contains no code. It contains no example of an explanation, good or bad. It contains no metric for "better." It contains, in its entirety, sixty-three words and one parenthetical disclaimer that performs precisely the function of the phrase "no offense"—which is to say, it announces the conclusion it pretends to disavow.

The conclusion, stripped of its hedging, is this: the machine is a superior colleague. The hedging, stripped of its conclusion, is: "not saying it replaces humans but kinda wild." One notes the conjunction.

What the poster describes is not, in the strict sense, a comparison. A comparison would require that the person making it possess the competence to evaluate both sides. The poster has told us, by the very nature of his complaint, that he cannot read legacy code without assistance. He then ranks the quality of assistance provided by a machine against the quality provided by the engineers who wrote the code he cannot read—engineers whose explanations, whatever their deficiencies of manner, have the structural advantage of being produced by people who understand the system under discussion. The machine's explanation has the structural advantage of being produced by a system that does not.

This is not a minor distinction. It is the entire distinction.

The commercial dynamics at work are worth examining with some care. OpenAI's product, in this application, is not accuracy. Accuracy is expensive, difficult, and frequently unpleasant—it requires the expert to say "this is more complicated than you think," which is a sentence no one enjoys hearing. What the machine sells instead is fluency. It produces explanations that are clear, patient, comprehensive, and delivered without the social friction that attends asking a busy senior engineer to walk you through code for the third time. The explanations may also be correct. They may not. The customer, by his own account, is not in a position to tell the difference.

This is not a deficiency of the product. It is the product.

The market for fluent explanation is, by any measure, enormous. Software companies employ hundreds of thousands of junior engineers whose daily experience includes staring at code they did not write and do not understand, written by people who have neither the time nor the institutional incentive to explain it. The machine fills this gap with supernatural patience and zero organizational politics. That it occasionally fabricates function behaviors, invents API parameters, or confidently describes code paths that do not exist is, from the customer's perspective, indistinguishable from a correct answer—because the customer has already told us he cannot distinguish between the two.

One might frame this as a failure of the machine. It is more precisely a failure of the market to price verification. The poster's satisfaction is genuine. His productivity may well have increased. The code he ships after consulting the machine may even be functional, in the same way that a medical diagnosis obtained from a confident stranger on a bus may happen to be correct. The difficulty is not that the method never works. The difficulty is that when it fails, the failure is invisible to the person relying on it, and visible only to the senior engineers whose competence he has just publicly ranked below that of an autocomplete system.

The poster cannot parse legacy code. He receives a fluent parsing from a machine. He concludes that the machine is better at parsing than the people who wrote the code. He does not conclude that he has received a product optimized for the appearance of understanding rather than understanding itself. He does not conclude this because the product is, in fact, very well optimized.

The parenthetical—"not saying it replaces humans"—deserves a moment's attention. It appears in nearly every such testimonial, performing the ritual function of a disclaimer in a prospectus: present, noted, and intended to be disregarded. The poster is, of course, saying exactly that it replaces humans. He is saying it in a forum dedicated to the product, soliciting confirmation from other users of the product, in a post that contains no evidence, no methodology, and no acknowledgment that the bar for recognizing a good explanation is not the same as the bar for recognizing a fluent one.

The market will, as markets do, sort this out. The sorting will not be gentle. But the quarterly numbers, for now, are excellent, and the customer satisfaction surveys are uniformly positive—filled out, as they are, by people who have every reason to be satisfied and no means to know whether they should be.
