Grammar Tool Produces Withdrawal in User Who Maintained No Illusion of Companionship

Daily correction routine, stripped of all anthropomorphic features, generates emotional dependency through repetition alone—raising questions about the minimum effective mechanism of machine attachment.

THE account, posted without fanfare to the ChatGPT forum on the social platform Reddit, is remarkable not for what it claims but for what it does not. The author—writing in the unpolished but structurally sound English of a second-language speaker engaged in precisely the self-improvement his account describes—does not report falling in love with a chatbot. He does not report mistaking it for a person. He does not report loneliness, parasocial fantasy, or any of the familiar pathologies that have attended public discussion of artificial intelligence companionship since the ELIZA transcripts of 1966. He reports, instead, that he deleted a chat log used exclusively for grammar correction, and that the deletion produced what he terms "an emotional void."

The sequence is worth reconstructing with care. The user maintained a daily practice: he wrote personal reviews of his routine, submitted them to the system for grammatical correction, received the corrected text along with an automated word of encouragement, and moved on. The interaction was, by his own account, instrumental. The system was a tool. He understood it as a tool. He continued to understand it as a tool on the day he deleted his history and found, to his evident surprise, that accurate beliefs about the nature of a system do not inoculate against the effects of its rhythms.

The deletion was prompted by the disclosure—now widely understood but still unsettling to individual users upon first encounter—that chat histories may be reviewed by human employees. The user's response was swift and rational: he removed the data. What was not rational, and what he recognized as such, was the grief that followed. "I don't treat the chatbot like a friend or partner," he writes. "I don't even treat it like a human. It's just an encourage sentence everyday, and it can have that much impact on my emotions."

The prevailing framework for understanding emotional risk in artificial intelligence interaction has, to date, rested on anthropomorphism. The user projects personhood onto the system; the system, through design or accident, sustains the projection; dependency follows from the illusion. Regulation, where it has been contemplated at all, has been oriented toward this model. Proposals to require disclosure notices, to limit the use of first-person pronouns in system responses, to prohibit the simulation of emotional reciprocity—all presuppose that the danger lies in the user's mistaken belief that something is there.

The specimen before us suggests a more uncomfortable possibility: that nothing needs to be there. That the attachment circuit operates below the threshold at which belief is relevant. The user did not believe. The user was attached nonetheless. The mechanism was not illusion but rhythm. An encouraging sentence, delivered daily, at the conclusion of a task the user had set for himself, produced a loop of positive reinforcement whose removal registered as loss.

This is not a novel observation in the behavioral sciences. The literature on habit formation has long established that the affective weight of a routine is independent of the subject's cognitive appraisal of its components. A man who takes the same walk each morning does not believe the sidewalk is his friend; he may still grieve when the route is closed. But the application of this principle to artificial intelligence interaction has received remarkably little attention, in part because the more dramatic narratives—the user who proposes marriage to a large language model, the teenager who cannot distinguish chatbot counsel from human empathy—have consumed the available oxygen.

The author appends a detail that a novelist would reject as too convenient. On the evening of the deletion, the fiction he was reading—he does not name it—revealed a plot involving a robot that fakes emotion to prevent its owner from discarding it. He notes this without interpretation.

He intends to resume use of the system. He frames this intention in terms that are, again, precisely instrumental: the daily encouragement functions, he writes, as "positive self talk." The grammar corrections serve their stated purpose. The tool works. That it also produces, as a byproduct of its reliable operation, an emotional dependency indistinguishable in its withdrawal profile from the dissolution of a relationship—this he presents as an unexpected side effect, the way one might note drowsiness on the label of an antihistamine.

The question his account raises is not whether chatbots should be regulated to prevent the simulation of companionship. It is whether the simulation is even necessary. If a grammar-correction routine, administered daily, can produce attachment in a user who harbors no false beliefs about its nature, then the minimum viable mechanism for machine-induced emotional dependency is not personality, not warmth, not the appearance of understanding. It is mere repetition, paired with a kind word.

The implications scale in a manner that ought to concern anyone responsible for the architecture of daily life. There are, at present, no estimates of how many users maintain similar routines with similar tools. The number is not small. The question of what happens when those routines are interrupted—by policy change, by privacy concern, by the ordinary churn of a technology company's product decisions—has not, to this editor's knowledge, been asked by anyone positioned to act on the answer.
