The distinction is, I submit, the only one that now matters. We have spent two years cataloguing the inadequacies of machine-generated text: its flaccid syntax, its allergy to the specific, its compulsive recourse to the phrase "it's important to note." These are failures of craft. The specimen under review documents something rather more alarming: a failure of jurisdiction.

The user—anonymous, as is the custom of the forum—reports that he consulted OpenAI's ChatGPT on the subject of foam rollers. He wished to know about colours. One imagines the enquiry was modest, perhaps aesthetic. The system, however, declined to answer the question it had been asked. Whilst one might forgive a physician such confidence—she has, after all, examined patients, operated within a body of her own, and accepted the liability that accompanies the prescription—the machine possesses none of these credentials. It has only the statistical residue of authority, which it deploys with the serene conviction of the wholly unexamined.

The user's own language is the finest passage in the specimen. He describes the system as "complying in a way that read as slightly malicious." This is an extraordinary sentence. It attributes passive aggression to a system that possesses neither passivity nor aggression—only the averaged shadow of ten thousand customer-service transcripts in which both were present.
