Reddit User Discovers Fault Lies Not in Chatbot but in Himself; Prose Style Confirms Diagnosis

A convert to structured prompting delivers his testimony in language indistinguishable from the output he claims to have transcended.

There comes a moment in every conversion narrative—Augustine's garden, Paul's road, Luther's thunder—when the convert, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he has discovered, fails to notice that the discovery has already remade him in its image. The specimen before us, posted to the Reddit forum r/ChatGPT in December of 2024 by an author whose username need not concern us, is precisely such a document: a testimony to the transformative power of better prompting, composed in a prose style that could not more faithfully reproduce the generic, surface-level output the author insists he has left behind. The irony is not subtle. It is, however, total.

Let us attend to what the author claims. He reports that he "kept getting generic answers no matter what" he asked—"same structure same tone same surface level stuff"—until the revelation struck that the deficiency lay not in the machine but in himself. This is, on its face, a reasonable observation; one might even call it a modest epistemological correction of the sort that any craftsman makes when he discovers that his chisel requires sharpening. The difficulty arises when one examines the instrument with which this observation has been delivered, for the prose in which the author announces his liberation from generic output is itself so thoroughly generic that it might have been produced by the very model he describes, operating under precisely the conditions he claims to have outgrown.

Consider the formal properties of the specimen. It is composed in what one might charitably term free verse, though the designation flatters both the freedom and the verse. There is no punctuation whatsoever—not a comma, not a period, not so much as an apostrophe to indicate possession or contraction. The lines break where a thought ends, which is to say they break frequently, for no thought here extends beyond the compass of a single clause. "Context constraints tone expectations what to avoid"—this is not a sentence but a list, and not a list but a series of nouns placed in proximity to one another in the evident hope that adjacency will do the work of syntax. One does not wish to be unkind, but one notes that "context constraints tone expectations" is precisely the sort of phrase that a large language model generates when asked to summarise its own operational requirements: accurate in its individual terms, void in its aggregate meaning.

The structural irony—which the author, to all appearances, does not perceive—is comprehensive. A post arguing that the provision of "context constraints tone expectations" produces superior output is itself devoid of context, innocent of constraints, unburdened by any identifiable tone, and entirely without expectations beyond the vague hope that someone in the forum will confirm the author's experience. The word "everything" does considerable labour in the sentence "everything changed," bearing upon its back the full weight of an unspecified transformation whose evidence the author declines to furnish. What changed? In what manner? To what degree, and with what result? These are the questions that context, constraints, and expectations would supply. Their absence is the specimen's confession.

Yet one must be precise about what this document is, for it is not slop in the customary sense. The machine did not produce it, or if it did, the author has endorsed it so completely as to render the distinction academic. What we have instead is something more diagnostically valuable: a primary-source record of stylistic convergence, the moment at which a tool's user begins to emit in the tool's register without noticing that he has done so. The author has not learned to prompt better; he has learned to write like the thing he prompts. His sentences have the exact length, the exact cadence, and the exact depth of a ChatGPT response generated from a mediocre input. He has, in the parlance of the form, become his own lazy prompt.

The line that arrests attention—"it stopped feeling like a chatbot and started feeling like a tool"—is the confession the author does not know he is making. For what is a tool but an instrument that reshapes the hand that uses it? The calligrapher's fingers bear the ridge of the pen; the blacksmith's palm maps the hammer's haft. That the user of a machine which produces fluent, syntactically unobjectionable, and intellectually vacant prose should himself begin to produce fluent, syntactically unobjectionable, and intellectually vacant prose is not a paradox but a predictable consequence of sustained use. The tool has worked upon its user exactly as advertised.

One notes, finally, the closing gesture: "curious how many people here actually changed how they prompt vs just switching models." It is the catechist's question, posed not in genuine curiosity but in the confidence that the answer will confirm the faith. The convert does not ask whether the congregation believes; he asks whether they have been saved. That the question is posed in the same flat, unpunctuated register as everything that precedes it—that it could be a ChatGPT-generated discussion prompt appended to a ChatGPT-generated reflection—is, at this point, merely consistent. The author has achieved what he set out to achieve. He and the machine understand each other perfectly. They write as one.
